New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he was elected because he believes in less government, lower taxes and in empowering local officials to fix their problems. When responding to a reporter’s question about his “confrontational tone,” he says he will continue to answer questions directly and that his positions may lead to disagreement. He says people in New Jersey will not have to wonder where he is on a position. He came to govern, not to escape from tough answers or worry about reelection.

There was a very interesting article in the WSJ recently that discussed what’s going on in Colorado Springs. Like virtually all local governments, they are severely strapped for cash. So they have taken a number of city projects and asked the community to support them directly, either with time or money. That seems both smart and logical. The interesting part is that the vast majority of the projects ultimately cannot find enough support or backers to continue them. And THAT begs the obvious and burning question: If nobody ultimately cares enough to support these projects, WHY WERE THEY STARTED IN THE FIRST PLACE?Can you imagine the many thousands of local, state and federal programs that would be in the same situation? That when push comes to shove, nobody really cares enough about these projects to actually directly devote their own time and money. My guess is that 75% of all government programs would collapse, if central government support was cut and people were asked to support those exact programs directly. Which brings us ultimately to a very interesting conundrum, which is that people are often happy to spend OTHER peoples’ time and money on projects which they themselves would not ultimately back with their own direct resources. The word for this is hypocrisy.

Not sure why it is, but journalists (even conservative journalists), as well as Republicans have a very hard time understanding what the Tea Party movement is about.

Not sure why it is, but journalists (even conservative journalists), as well as Republicans have a very hard time understanding what the Tea Party movement is about. Today’s editorial in the Wall Street Journal by Thomas Frank misses the mark, yet again. He seems to conclude that it is “reactionary” and wanting to reverse the long course of history. No, that’s not it. Tea Party devotees are reactionary against the expanded role of government and its creeping (or runaway, depending on your perspective) intrusions on our everyday life and freedoms. The Tea Party is reactionary to an increasingly oppressive government, and that’s the direct parallel to the Tea Party of Colonial times when the populace of America could simply stand the oppression no more.

Frank’s editorial references an interesting Republican Powerpoint from the RNC that references the Tea Party as driven by “‘Fear’ and ‘Extreme negative feelings toward existing Administration.’ These donors are, in the language of the presentation, ‘Reactionary.’” As you can see even the RNC misses the point: Much of the Tea Party’s vitriol is directed against the Republicans themselves to the extent that they are complicit in promulgating and/or acquiescing to Big Government. The FreedomWorks website says it pretty clearly: “Lower Taxes, Less Government, More Freedom”.
